About Us and the Ferry Industry
Welcome to the new look Ferrynews.com, recently re-launched to provide its subscriber readership with up to date and meaningful global news on the ferry industry. The ferry market, often accused of being conservative or even stick in the mud, sometimes surprises us all. Every so often the market moves forward at quite a pace as evidenced by some recent interesting dynamics and Ferrynews.com is here to provide you with the latest news, views and comment.
The seven-year cycle still prevails in shipping although as part of this rich pattern there are aspects of the market place that we take for granted even though the market is clearly on the move. The transition from ferries that are largely motivated and ‘driven’ by the passenger sector are gradually giving way to RoPax and more recently RoFlex vessels as freight grows substantially in importance. This in turn causes a number of challenges not least the need to restructure tonnage.
Shipbuilding, and specifically its competence in fuelling capacity, is a classic example. Shipyards have been through the Doldrums in recent years but there are signs that they are about to get their own back on a market that has in effect taken them for granted. The European shipbuilding industry has been subjected to substantial, extraordinary fluctuations in their material costs. From a supply and demand perspective as well as increasing material and equipment costs, the ship owner has had to pay more in recent years, with strong indications coming from the shipbuilding industry itself that the prices of new buildings will continue to increase beyond inflation.
Challenges will come and go in this fascinating industry but Ferrynews.com will always be there to provide you with the latest word from the sector itself and commentators worldwide.
