Shore jobs soar under German tonnage tax

Shore-based employment with German shipping companies and brokers has risen by a third since the introduction of the tonnage tax in 1999, according to latest figures from consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The company’s Maritime Competence Centre in Hamburg said the number employed reached 20,800 last year, contrasting with 15,900 in 1999.
