Record demolition rates ‘set to slide by $100 per ldt’

The word ‘record’ seems to have lost its meaning in the aftermath of the disbanding of the Bangladesh Ship Breakers’ Association in early February, writes Shirish Nadkarni in Mumbai.

Cash buyers from that country have been making offers for demolition tonnage that repeatedly put previous figures in the shade.

“It really made sense for Bangladeshi shipbreakers to get together and bid for demolition tonnage,” said medium-sized, Chittagong-based ship recycler Mushfiqur Chowdhury.
