Following complaints by ‘third parties’ that subsidies given to Scottish ferry operators CalMac and Northlink breached European Union rules on state aid, the European Commission is to open formal investigations. Both operators receive subsidies from the Scottish Executive for their lifeline services to the Western Isles (CalMac) and Orkney and Shetland (Northlink).
The commission is aware that it may be that such support constitutes fair compensation for the provision of ferry services.
