Of all the challenges facing the Italian shipping industry, the difficulty in attracting and retaining seagoing staff is the most pressing and potentially the most calamitous. It is also one of the areas where the power of a unified industry may be most usefully deployed.
Italy has certainly made a start. Confitarma and classification society Rina last year launched a training school in the Philippines aimed at supplying the Italian fleet.
