The first strike by UK coastguard has begun quietly with no major incidents reported in the first few hours. Around 700 members of the PCS union stopped working for 24 hours in an action which began at 0700GMT this morning. The Maritime Coastal Authority set up a Strategic Support Centre near Poole to cope with all emergency calls.
