The small, specialist UK shipbuilder Pendennis Shipyard has secured the £4m ($7.8m) contract to build a new cross-river ferry for the Dartmouth-Kingswear Floating Bridge Co. It will replace the existing Dartmouth Higher Ferry, which crosses the River Dart in Devon between Dartmouth and Kingswear, writes Mike Hood.
The new ferry will be delivered in the summer of 2009 and replaces the 47-year-old paddle-driven chain ferry.
It will double car capacity to 36 cars.
