Japanese industrial majors IHI and JFE Group have held discussions on a possible merger of their shipbuilding interests. No further details have been revealed. Although contract prices for ships have been reaching cyclical highs in recent months, the costs of steel, machinery and equipment have also been rising. Japan’s builders also face ever-stronger competition from South Korea and China.
